About The Work
Working in LA’s Evergreen Cemetery, Carmen Argote was drawn to the graves of anonymous women remembered in granite as only “MOTHER” or “HER”. Carmen brilliantly discovered that she could use her weight to press shapes into the malleable surface of woodblock plates, using this process, she forced the gravestone lettering into the wood.
Accompanying each woodblock print, Carmen drew on letters from her father, recontextualizing the writing with redactions and arrows. Printed on folded stationery stock, the letter facsimiles are presented together like a husband and wife. At first glance, the grainy woodblock prints appear to be a tabletop but upon closer inspection staccato letter forms appear. . .
