About The Work
Touring with emerging punk and and new wave bands of the 1970’s, Bob Gruen had the ultimate backstage pass, snapping candid, behind-the-scenes photos of legends like the New York Dolls and Sex Pistols. He was also John Lennon and Yoko Ono's personal photographer, capturing their working life and private moments. In 1974 he shot this iconic portrait of the then 34-year-old Beatle on the roof of his rented East 52nd Street penthouse, wearing a t-shirt the photographer had bought on the sidewalk. In 2014, Gruen began using silkscreen methods to create variations on his photographs, such as this work where Gruen reinterprets the original by colorizing select elements with vibrant hues.
