About The Work
seam is an example of Ann Hamilton’s experimentations with variable prints, wherein an edition of a single artwork can include slight variances in color, hue, or materials, a playful nod to the conventions by which such artworks are distributed. In the case of this collaged work, made in an edition of 55, a square of fleece on the even-numbered prints is cream-colored, whereas the same fleece on the odd-numbered prints is brown. The other materials Hamilton uses here exemplify the artist’s interest in how fibers derived from natural sources weave layers of meaning into abstract forms. Gampi tissue and Asuka paper, the main components of the artwork, are traditional organic Japanese papers made from pressed vegetable fibers.
