About The Work
Andrea Büttner’s work explores poverty, dignity, and artistic practice–particularly in the context of women’s religious communities. Places of simplicity, solitude, and concealment, Büttner reveals convents to be repositories of artistic treasures such as nun’s handicrafts, amateur art, and popular leisure culture. The economy of the religious household may seem set apart from worldly priorities, but perhaps echoes the experience and vocation of many artists as they eke out a living in the context of the contemporary art market. Untitled (2015) is a limited edition artwork created from a photographic image taken by the artist while visiting a monastic community. The edition accompanies Büttner’s work included in the 2015 Whitechapel Gallery exhibition Adventures of the Black Square: Abstract Art and Society 1915–2015 .
