About The Work
Born from the concept of space as a place of refuge for the human race, Refugee Astronaut embodies the artist’s vision of our planet should we fail to act on rising temperatures and the displacement of people worldwide. Despite changes to our environment becoming increasingly perceptible, actions to minimize the consequences of climate change are slow to react. Shonibare is quick to point out the implications of capitalism, beating on, undeterred by finite and depleting resources. Refugee Astronaut is therefore the anti-colonist, seeking not a place to conquer, but rather a place still habitable.
