About The Work
Arctic, Future Relics is a series of pinhole photographs of glacial ice mounted with aged wood. The images were shot while traveling under the midnight sun of the summer solstice on a sailboat with the Arctic Circle Program along the West coast of Svalbard, 10 degrees below the North Pole. With the series Arctic, Future Relics, I explore glacial ice and water considering their vulnerability, fragility and potential future of disappearance. The images are shot with a pinhole camera, giving a softness and duration to the exposures. The glacial ice becomes plastic, living and breathing. I explore glacial ice and water considering their vulnerability, fragility and potential future of disappearance. In mounting the prints, I consider how to enhance the delicacy of the subject and the medium, Gelatin Silver Prints. Usually one find a GSP matted, framed and behind glass. Wood is a special and rare commodity in Svalbard, as no trees grow there. All the wood either drifts in from the South onto the shores, is imported or is part of historic settlements, known as cultural heritage. So, I present Arctic, Future Relics suspended and braced with aged wood slivers.
