Thomas Bangsted

Danish-born, New York-based artist Thomas Bangsted is a landscape photographer whose work evokes the sublime in nature. Bangsted’s photographs evolve through a drawn out process, often requiring years to realize a single piece. He takes images of the same places over an extended period of time to create a new understanding of place. Bangsted’s images also generate a sense of the uncanny. Whether it is the precarious tilt of a ship’s masthead or a horse’s frozen jump, the viewer is forced to question what they are seeing.

Bangsted has had numerous solo shows, including Brandts 13, Denmark, Marc Strauss, New York, Galleri Tom Christoffersen, Denmark, and Galleri Hornbaek Denmark. Group exhibits include Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Art, New York, The Bronx Museum of the Arts, New York, The Prague Biennial, and the New York Photo Festival. He has received a range of awards and fellowships from The New York Foundation for the Arts, the Jerome Foundation, and The Danish Arts Council.
