About The Work
In Autumn 2020 Chisenhale Gallery presented the first solo exhibition in a UK institution by Ho Chi Minh City-based artist Thao Nguyen Phan.
Phan’s commission Becoming Alluvium, builds on her ongoing research into the Mekong River, which runs through Tibet, China, Burma, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam. Composed of two elements – a single channel film work and a series of lacquer and silk paintings – the works simultaneously explore real and imaginary worlds, weaving narratives concerning industrialisation, food security, and ecological sustainability with folklore and myth.
To accompany the exhibition, Phan has produced a triptych print based upon three watercolour sketches from a larger series of original watercolours that are used as animations in her film Becoming Alluvium. The imagery depicts the human body alongside animal and plant life, highlighting evocative fragments within Phan’s ongoing use of narrative rooted in folklore and environmental responsibility.
