About The Work
This edition depicts a scanned and printed detail from Tanoa Sasraku’s Terratypes (2022) series, which comprise layers of newsprint stained with ink and earth pigment that has been foraged from Dartmoor, Devon and Isle of Skye, Scotland, before being submerged in sea, river or bog water.
These Terratype details are then reproduced in the large, freestanding sculptures titled Liths, five of which are shown in Tanoa’s exhibition at PEER of the same name.
Printed onto Awagami Kozo paper, the edition, titled Scholar’s Rock (2022), depicts a Terratype section that holds particular importance to Tanoa. It is the only one in the series that was soaked in the bogs of Dartmoor, near where the artist grew up and the site of many formative experiences. Within the edition, blades of grass can be seen knotted into the weave of the fringed newsprint, showing evidence of its grounding within the landscape.
