Works of art categorized as new media involve digital technology in some way. Because of the historical availability of these technologies, new media work has only been around since the 1980s. Some works of new media include digital hardware as a component of the actual artwork—for example, Esmeralda Kosmatopoulos’s Universal Colors series contains iPads as integral pieces of the work. Other works are produced and distributed using new technologies. Art films, once made through the labor intensive task of cutting and splicing physical film, has been transformed by the ready availability of digital cameras and editing software. The medium continues to be innovated by artists like Corinne Spencer and Ann Hirsch. Beginning in the 2010s, 3D printed artwork has become a significant category that utilizes cutting-edge technology for its production. This new form of sculpture is practiced by artists like Josh Kline and Joris Laarman. The possibilities for two-dimensional media have also expanded with new computer technologies. For example, artist Jeremy Olson transforms photographs into 3D anaglyph prints, which appear three-dimensional when viewed with 3D glasses.
New technologies have transformed the delivery and distribution of new media art. No longer confined to physical devices like floppy disks or CD-Roms, they may be distributed via the Internet and displayed on myriad surfaces and apparatuses. The advent of new digital media continue to expand the definition of how art is made and what it can be. Other contemporary artists creating new media works include Jakka Pallasvuo, Wickerham and Lomax, Andrew Norman Wilson, and Sam Falls.
