    About The Work

Chisenhale are pleased to announce a new work by Simnikiwe Buhlungu. This limited edition has been produced exclusively by Buhlungu to support Chisenhale Gallery’s programme.

Viewpoint at Tswaing; 1.13 km from opposite side of crater rim, 2024 depicts the Tswaing crater in Soshanguve, Gauteng, South Africa. Formed 220,000 years ago, a saline lake lies at the centre and can be reached by a 7.6 km hike. Owing to the different salt and nutrient content in the soil within and surrounding the crater, varying flora grow across its elevations. Tswaing means ‘place of salt’ in Setswana – today, in addition to being both a cultural and heritage site, it is also a spiritual one for congregation and prayer.

Tswaing served as a primary research site for Buhlungu’s Chisenhale Gallery commission, in which different scales of poolings invite us to question the methods and tools through which knowledge is produced and accessed. Accordinging to the Ditsong Tswaing Crater Museum’s trail map, the size of the crater is equivalent to hosting ‘four simultaneous football matches and half a million spectators’. Considering the unimaginable scale of the crater, Buhlungu asks: for whom might a crater be a puddle?

Printed on Kozo paper, crafted from natural Mulberry fibres and pure mountain water, the materiality of the edition nods to Buhlungu’s new body of work in which a series of water samples circulate and pool. Collectors may opt to trim the edition’s border upon framing, as displayed at the gallery by the recommendation of the artist.
