About The Work
Ruth Ewan created this limited edition print exclusively for Chisenhale Gallery. It marks the realization of her 2010 commission Dreadnoughts as well as the culmination of her year-long residency in three English secondary schools, during which she explored the radical history of East London. This work consists of nine small drawings on found early 20th century cigarette cards; they were created by four students from St Paul's Way School. Taking inspiration from Sylvia Pankhurst's transformation of a local pub, The Gunmakers' Arms, into a nursery known as The Mothers' Arms in 1914, the boys were invited to apply the same pacifist logic to a series of images of warships.
