About The Work
Suns From Flickr, 2006 is a unique piece that is based on the pages from Umbrico's monograph, Penelope Umbrico (photographs) an Aperture Foundation publication. For this edition, the collector picks a page (the 4 x 4 ft piece) or a double page spread (the 4 x 8 ft piece) from the Suns section of the monograph Aperture Foundation published with Penelope Umbrico, who then makes the individual 4 x 6 prints that get mounted to form the grid, which reflects the way they are laid out on the page; no two images are alike, as she never uses the same file from flickr, so each sequence is unique. Once the page or pages is sold, they are no longer available.
Penelope Umbrico (photographs)presents a unique and challenging approach to quintessential issues of representation in contemporary culture. Umbrico offers a radical reinterpretation of everyday consumer and vernacular images. She considers how images are used to construct and communicate consumer desire, and questions whether the growing volume of images we view online can foster a critical visual literacy.
