About The Work
Arguably the most celebrated artist of the modern era, Pablo Picasso’s influence on art history is undeniable. Known for gestural strokes, Cubist abstraction and a strict adherence to technique, Picasso’s style shifted greatly over the course of his massive career, however certain themes remained throughout. In this etching from 1960, Vieillard surprenant une Femme au Lit, the scene of an old man surprising a woman in bed is rendered using the simple contour lines that have become immediately recognizable as Picasso’s own.
