About The Work

"Dear Mr. Roth, today we begin construction of an art space which will be behind the portico at the crossing of Obermainbrücke and Schöne Aussicht in Frankfurt. [...] Since I will be going to the Städelschule for the winter semester to become its rector next year, I have asked for this exhibition space as my morning gift"—Kasper König to Dieter Roth, July 13, 1987).

Portikus is looking at a history of 180 exhibitions and a legacy of exhibition-making recognized world-wide. Enough reason to celebrate and to invite artists representative of this history to create a special Jubilee edition.

Reminiscent of Portikus' origins as Frankfurt's legendary exhibition space in a ‘box’, all works in this edition are assembled in a specially designed crate, which itself is the contribution of artist Michael Beutler. The income generated from this edition will allow the realization of future exhibitions and publications. Symbolically, the box comes in an edition of twenty-five. 25 Years in a Box! has been made possible with kind support by Städelschule Portikus e.V.

The contributing artists are Thomas Bayrle, Michael Beutler, Jimmie Durham, Olafur Eliasson, Wade Guyton, Georg Herold, Judith Hopf, Sarah Lucas, Matt Mullican, Gabriel Orozco, Tobias Rehberger, Thomas Ruff, Nora Schultz, Andreas Slominski, Rirkrit Tiravanija, and Haegue Yang.
