About The Work
The inspiration and source material for New York based, Israel born artist Nir Hod’s series “Mother” comes from the iconic photograph, Warsaw Ghetto Boy, long considered one of the defining images of the Holocaust. For Mother the artist singled out the foremost female figure in the iconic scene. This work, like many others throughout his career, examines the intersection of glamour, beauty and death. For this pigment print, based on the original oil painting, Hod renders his “Mother” figure in shades of blue, her skin and hair glowing like a still from a Film Noir classic. Re-contextualizing her raised hands with reference to Warhol’s iconic “shadow” paintings and Old Master portraits, Hod’s figure transcends the dark reality of the original photograph.
