About The Work
Chisenhale Gallery is pleased to announce a special new work by Nikita Gale, MOLOSSIAN HOUNDS, (2022), as part of Chisenhale Editions.
In July 2022 Chisenhale Gallery presents IN A DREAM YOU CLIMB THE STAIRS, American artist Nikita Gale’s first solo exhibition in the UK. The exhibition continues Gale’s creation of atmospheric large-scale installations, this time taking Toni Morrison’s 1977 award-winning novel Song of Solomon as its starting point, notably the solitary and unknowable character of Circe and her pack of Weimaraner dogs. Gale brings to life an ambitious interpretation of Circe’s feral and free domain exploring the nature of visibility, attention, and the limits of human senses.
To accompany IN A DREAM YOU CLIMB THE STAIRS, Gale has produced a special limited edition titled MOLOSSIAN HOUNDS. Translated as a digital collage, the edition is a visual interplay of a statue of a dog in three iterations: the original Roman marble sculpture, currently in the British Museum collection, and two of its stone replicas –– one coated in lichen which Gale encountered close to Chisenhale Gallery in Victoria Park, the other replica can be found at the Vatican. Gale’s medley of these three related canines is showcased on a bright royal blue background, echoing scientific discoveries of the blue/yellow spectrum of a dogs’ vision. MOLOSSIAN HOUNDS extends out of Gale’s commission which addresses interspecies relationships – a visual memento of the role and depiction of dogs in our society.
