About The Work
Located on the bank of the Niranjana river, Bodh Gaya is a holy pilgrimage site that is part of the Mahabodhi Temple Complex in Bihar, India’s Gaya district. It is the most important of the four sites related to the life of Gautama Buddha, and it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2002. In this photo, Nicholas Vreeland captures the image of a Bhuddist monk praying at the sacred structure; the thoughtful composition places the subject in the lower quadrant of the image, slightly offset from the center. In this way, Vreeland effortlessly balances the vibrant color of the monk’s robes with the sunlit temple. Proceeds from the sale of this photograph (produced in an edition of 100) will benefit the Tibet Center in New York City.
