About The Work
Maria Lax is a London based photographer originally from a small town in Northern Finland. She is known for her use of colour and experimental camera techniques.
Since restrictions were lifted last year, Maria has wasted no time and has quickly raced back out into the harsh conditions of her native Finland. Enduring the extreme cold of the remote areas of Northern Finland, Maria has been exploring a forest of giant trees slumbering beneath a thick blanket of snow. A naturally occurring phenomena in the Arctic Circle where trees are caked with heavy snow that makes them look like cotton candy, she has filled the landscape by her signature use of colour and long exposures. Inspired by ‘revontulet’ or ‘fox fires’ which is the term for Northern Lights in Finland, the results have been these psychedelic landscapes. This series is ongoing so please keep an eye out for new releases over time.
Maria Lax’s work has been exhibited at fairs and festivals worldwide. Maria Lax was one of the winners of British Journal of Photography’s Female in Focus awards, 2019 and a finalist in the BJP Portrait of Humanity, 2020, PHMuseum Photography Grant Finalist, 2020, Winner of the In Cadaques festival Open Call, 2020.
Maria Lax has exhibited extensively in the UK and Europe including Photo London Fair as well as solo shows with her debut series Some Kind of Heavenly Fire at PHmuseum Photolab, Bologna, Italy, 2021 and Open Walls Arles, Galerie Huit Arles, Rencontres d’Arles, Arles, France, 2021.
