About The Work
Ice Age and Raw Earth are the latest in Manifold’s series of Iris editions by Marc Quinn. Published in a limited edition of 50, Ice Age and Raw Earth are both circular editions, accentuating the subtle gradations of the iris as well as the curvatures of the screenprinted map of the Atlantic.
Working as both a geographic and a corporeal topography, Ice Agepresents a visual index of identity in a digital age. The overlaid map is adorned with soft white diamond dust, capturing the shimmers of the retina and contrasting with the pitch black pupil at the centre.
As the only internal organ visible on the outside of the body, Quinn remarks that “The iris is in a way our doorway to the world, it is the window we see out of and the doorway for light to enter and interact with our nervous system. They are like a leakage of the vivid interior world of the body to the monochrome world of the skin.” Particularly resonant in our digitally saturated world, Quinn’s Iris series comments on how the boundaries of experience and geographical territory as we know them are rapidly changing.
