About The Work
Semblance of Self is a new series of paintings and constructions that draw upon ordinary daily life to convey the universal and conceptual nature of things. The artist takes instances from her daily experience, extracts and magnifies them until they transcend what they are, and connote something else. This work is the next iteration of a series of paintings, History of the Mundane, that the artist made from 2006 to 2019.
"While making my Deconstructed Paintings, I suddenly realized how to make these new works. Here, I combine elements of abstraction, dimension, and geometric shape with realism and an amplification of the visual experience. A slept-in bed becomes a landscape of hills and valleys, expectations, and new beginnings. My father’s old and faded flag is a communicator of how one interprets current societal affairs. A stand of birch trees combined with shape and dimension find an alternative way to convey the witness to time and the experience of the land.
Inspired by nature, history, and the spaces humans create for themselves, my paintings conflate place and structure with memory and perception. I draw upon the experiences of place, seeking to distill the natural world and our perception of things down to their very essence."
