    About The Work

My latest series of work titled “La Edad del Viento” (The Age of the Wind) is comprised of two main elements: Nature as a metaphor for the substantive real world, and text as a symbol for knowledge. The text, usually written in cursive on the top of the work, describes allegorical first events. In most of the pieces in this series, the events refer to various qualities of light (reflection, refraction, shadow, glow, color, etc.) as light has been an archetypical constant throughout creationist myths and cosmogonies worldwide.

The paradox of describing natural phenomena – that not only precede humanity but is by definition untraceable – is a metaphor to our contradictory instinct of understanding the universe and the narrow limits of this understanding. The structure of the text is always the same grandiose phrase “This was the first…”. This intentional repetition acts as an echo to the repetitive rhetoric and language structure common in religious narratives. These works establish a chronology, referencing finitude and the passage of time as existential premises. - Jorge Rios
