About The Work
At the heart of Borofsky’s art is the activity of drawing. For him, drawing is a demonstration of his thoughts and that process itself is an object. Borofsky is prone to contemplating new manifestations of an initial impulse, and many versions or transformations can result. The Gemini G.E.L. series Male/Female, 2000, is a classic example of these elements at play. Each of the 12 lithograph/screenprints within the Male/Female series employs a bold composition of brightly colored images of a male and female figure overlapping to create a third area of color. Where the two figures blend together, a new form is produced. The male and female sides of the artist’s work on many occasions relate to the left and right side of the brain, like positive and negative charges. The state of “wholeness” is also a major theme in his art, which can be understood in the overlay of the male and female outlines visible in these works. In his work, Borofsky explores the philosophical and psychological values inherent in the human spirit; themes of spiritual well-being, wholeness, and contemplation of the nature of the universe have always played a central role.
