About The Work
Active since the late sixties, Joan Jonas is a central figure of experimentation in performance and video, known for her symbolic vocabulary of ritual and gestures. This hand-printed silk-cashmere-wool shawl is inspired by the artist's aesthetic research. The shawl’s central motif is the butterfly, an iconic element of the artist's work. Jonas considers the butterfly in Aby Warburg’s terms–as symbol to fill in the modern spiritual void.
