About The Work
Jean-Michel Basquiat’s crown has become synonymous with his work. The first crown appeared in Red Kings (1981), and through all later appearances, the crown depicted Black men as saints and kings. The artist used this symbol to recognize the power of his influences and heroes.
This t-shirt features Basquiat’s iconic crown embroidered on the front left chest. The bottom right of the shirt features a sewn-in woven tag with handwritten text pulled from one of Basquiat’s famed notebook pages.
