About The Work
Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-1988) remains one of the most important artists of his generation. As a key figure in the New York’s art scene, he passionately explored the interplay between words, text, and images, first as a member of SAMO—a graffiti group active on the Lower East Side in the late 1970s—and then as an artist acclaimed for his unmistakable Neo-expressionist style. Between 1980 and 1987, Basquiat filled several classic marble notebooks with handwritten prose, poems, and personal observations on culture, race, class, and life in New York City. This publication will coincide with a major exhibition—on view at the Brooklyn Museum of Art from April 3, 2015, to August 23rd, 2015 before traveling to the High Museum in Atlanta—THE NOTEBOOKS (June 2015) is a seven-volume facsimile edition of the artist’s rarely-seen private notebooks. Reproductions of Basquiat’s writing alongside drawings and pictograms that recur in his works on paper—such as faces, buildings, crowns, and teepees—provide an intimate look at the creative process of one of the most unforgettable forces in contemporary American art.
Larry Warsh is an art collector, producer, and publisher of Keith Haring 31 Subway Drawings (2012) and the editor of Weiwei-isms (Princeton, 2013). He is currently on the board of the nonprofit organization Muse Film and Television, NY, and was a member of the Basquiat Authentication Committee from its establishment in 1984 to its dissolution in 2012.
