About The Work
Jay Lynn Gomez’s new print edition Storrier Stearns Japanese Garden captures a moment of peace for the artist that arrived during a period of pressured work activity in late 2019, as Jay Lynn prepared for her solo show Here, For A Moment at CJG. In the final couple of weeks before that show, a friend invited her out to Pasadena to visit the Storrier Stearns Japanese Garden to clear her mind and recharge. While exploring the gardens Jay Lynn experienced a moment seemingly conjured expressly for her - at a pond framed by a Japanese tea house, trees, and rock gardens, a maintenance man emerged and began sweeping leaves from the surface of the pond in a gentle, deliberate manner. This lasted several minutes, all of which held Jay Lynn in rapt attention. The trip to the Garden provided a valuable respite during Jay Lynn's final push to complete her show. Months later she painted the scene on stretched cardboard, employing a loose, more expressive style that felt appropriate for the scene - the worker being the still center of the composition amid the swirling dance of nature. The world is out of control, coming apart, but the worker is there, faithfully. Responding to our current moment of collective stress and concern, Jay Lynn wanted to develop an edition based on her painting and offer it in the hope that it might bring others moments of peace and contemplation.
