About The Work
This exclusive edition is by New York–based painter Jamian Juliano–Villani. Juliano–Villani’s paintings are composed using an atlas of appropriated images, personal photographs, and reproductions of existing artworks. The artist wryly refers to her compositions as ‘arranged marriages’ in which imagery is painted, repainted, and edited directly on the canvas, an almost masochistically longhand form of collage that is at odds with the speed at which we consume images today.
Juliano–Villani’s new edition for Studio Voltaire similarly samples material that is at once personal and obscure – a short story or poem detailing a personification of ‘Art’. The text could be equally interpreted as gauche adolescent musings, or an inspiring affirmation of art’s ability to transcend the everyday. The artist has attributed the text to a fellow student at the Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University, who drew her attention as the ‘angriest’ looking person in the University’s yearbook.
Each blanket is made on a hand–loom by master Scottish craftspeople with a rich heritage of knitwear and textile production using natural materials. The double–sided knitting style achieves a design rich finish. The front face of the blanket showcases the artist’s work, whilst a birdseye pattern driven by the knitting style, is achieved on the underside. Each blanket has a noticeably soft handle and luxurious feel.
The edition is available in two colour ways. As the edition is hand–loomed in Scotland, please allow three weeks for delivery. All our artist’s blankets are machine washable.
