About The Work
In 1942, Henri MATISSE was asked to create a book of colored paper cut-outs. He decided to use his then-preferred and revolutionary technique of cut-outs, filling the pages with carefully crafted collages and clashing colors on gouache-painted paper. The result, on one particular page, was a dark silhouette with a passionately red heart, falling out of a sky of stars.
This, of course, references the fate of Icarus and is said to be inspired by the artist’s concerns over his wife and daughter’s dedication to the Resistance. Here, the now famous image, is presented on a solo skate art edition as an ode to MATISSE’s lasting artistic impact.
