    About The Work

    After digesting many of the predominant trends of twentieth century art, including Abstract Expressionism, Minimalism, and Postminimalism, Phelan hit her stride, creating paintings and drawings of bucolic landscapes. In this work, a fenced paddock is visible behind a scrim of translucent mist. The image is at once mundane and dreamlike. "I thought I was giving into my own romantic, retro-regional style," the artist has said self-deprecatingly. Instead, she creates nostalgic landscapes that are anything but old-fashioned.
