Donald Sultan is a prolific American painter, sculptor, and printmaker best known for his unconventional use and application of industrial materials such as tar, aluminum, and enamel.
Sultan's work is rich with contradictory elements. Rough, weighted materials are layered in rich applications, a contrary approach to the supple imagery of flowers, fruits, and everyday objects represented throughout his oeuvre. In a sense, Sultan is a second-generation Pop artist, with his interest in everyday objects explored through different mediums and moods.
Executed in bold, geometric shapes and a typically monochromatic palette, Sultan reduces his subjects to their essence in both color and form. His simple approach celebrates the ethos of the subject, resulting in qualities that ranges from playful and optimistic to ominous.
Martini is a chic example of Sultan's pared-down aesthetic. Featuring a perfect martini glass, Sultan accentuates its triangular brim by juxtaposing it with three plump olives that rest in the center of the cocktail.
