About The Work
Miyajima (1973) shows the sitter straight on, her eyes direct. This vintage image explores the wholesome fertility of youth: a young woman gazing like a Fujichrome Mona Lisa, her full lips gently pursed, with an aberration on the film emulsion, linked to the illusion and transience of beauty. The flashes of purple bleeding through the composition exist in the original transparency and are not the result of digital manipulation. There are elements from Moriyama’s black & white work-- the lips and graphic background--but in color the focus on her face feels intimate.
“The black and white tells about my inner worlds, my emotions and deep feelings... as a vagabond wandering aimlessly. Color describes what I meet without any filters, and I like to record the instant for the way it looks to me... [Color] is polite, gentle, as I see myself towards the world.” —Daido Moriyama
Moriyama’s work in color is truly revelatory. As a counterpoint to the bold perspective of his black & white photography, his color work appears fluidly nuanced.
