About The Work
For most of his career, Cosimo Cavallaro has engaged cheese as one of his principal media. He has covered objects, coated rooms, constructed walls, and even coated a human or two in cheese. The painterly and sculptural properties of various cheeses appeal to Cavallaro, but so does the social import of the foodstuff, one of the key elements of Euro-American cuisine – and so do the artist’s personal memories of working in his mother’s Formaggio deli in Montréal. Cavallaro pays fond homage to his medium, his mother, and his memories with his Big Cheese series of sculptural objects, three hand-signed solid bronze replications of what struck the artist as you might say, the right slice at the right time. The objects are at once mysterious abstract forms – geometries imperfected by random bubbles – and deftly cut examples of Emmenthaler. Their abstract beauty, enhanced by their highly polished surfaces, may be gratifying, but they trigger one appetite even as they sate another.
