About The Work
Claudio Bravo (1936-2011) is a renowned Chilean artist, best known for his meticulous hyperrealist artworks. Bravo is celebrated for his intricate precision which captures his distinctly surreal and dreamlike subject matter. One of the few South American artists in the "Auction Million" club, his auction record of $1.51 million was achieved in 2012.
Within Bravo's work, there is a coexistence of hyperrealism and surrealism challenging the boundaries of what is real. Through unexpected juxtapositions, unusual settings, or distortions of reality, Bravo draws the viewer into a mysterious dreamscape that feels equally familiar and bizarre.
This untitled drawing epitomizes Bravo's ethos as an artist. The work features a cluster of entangled studio lights scattered on a hardwood floor next to what appears to be a sculptural (or mounted) foot.
Aside from a mysterious shadow in the bottom right corner, the close-cropped composition is stripped of context, leaving the viewer to search for clues within this peculiar setting. Could this be a candid still-life capturing the inner workings of a photography studio, or something more sinister? It is works such as this one, that offer the mystery and verisimilitude that Bravo is known for.
