About The Work
Clare Woods is known for her large-scale painting practice. Originally trained as a sculptor, her painting work examines the physicality of objects and form. Often working with oil on aluminium, Wood uses found images as a starting point to create works that sit between abstraction and figuration. Her 2006 Chisenhale Gallery solo exhibition, Deaf Man’s House comprised three large-scale paintings that physically enclosed the viewer in the reflective surface of the works.
Woods’ Chisenhale Archive Edition, The Overnighter (2019), is based on a photograph from the artist’s archive, representing a classic Venetian Murano glass chandelier. The edition is produced as a monoprint with Woods’ painterly gestures and interventions existing as a single printed impression, making each edition unique. Drawn by the delicate forms and sparkling surfaces of the glass chandelier, Woods plays with the reflection and refraction of the object, allowing its form to dissolve in the rich layer of colour. Comprising a set of two prints, the edition intends to capture a sense of stillness, and through its contrasting tones the work explores both the past and present.
