About The Work
"A Chukchee sketch representing paths in the world of the death is haunting in its linework and suggestion of verticality (the holes represent entrances into this underground realm, and some of the lines cross, which makes me think of paths sliding over one another at different depths ad infinitum). The idea of ghosts traveling along specific vertical paths really affected me for some reason, and it suggested a kind of ancestor travel in the double helix structure of DNA. Looking back on it, I think this drawing was an attempt to seek comfort by mapping connective paths to the people who are gone." — Aya Nakamura
