Thomas Nozkowski
Solidly grounded in Abstract Expressionist tradition, process-oriented painter Thomas Nozkowski’s method is predicated on relinquishing the idea of an end result. To highlight this, in 2010 the Pace Gallery exhibited his oil paintings in tandem with oil on paper companions, thematically similar iterations depicting another direction each painting could have taken. Drawing inspiration from patterns and shapes in the environments around him, Nozkowski’s work is characterized by vivid color, an accumulation of geometrical and organic shapes, and experimentation with the figure-ground relationship.
Nozowski began exhibiting his works in 1973 and made his solo debut in 1979. Since then he has exhibited internationally at more than 300 museum and gallery shows and 70 solo shows. In 1982 one of his paintings was selected for the Museum of Modern Art in New York's permanent collection. Nowowski has received awards from the American Academy of Arts and Letters (1999), the Guggenheim Fellowship for Creative Arts (1993), and the New York State Foundation for the Arts Fellowship. His works are featured in permanent collections at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and have appeared in Bomb Magazine, Hyperallergic, Artnews, and The Brooklyn Rail.
