Susan Shatter

Susan Louise Shatter was an American painter best known for her expressive watercolor landscape paintings. Shatter was a passionate proponent of watercolors, and worked to defy the notion that the medium required little skill. Her rich, earth-toned depictions of North American canyons and coastlines are evocative of immense feeling and mood, whether placid or tempestuous. 

Shatter's work is exhibited in public collections at The Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the National Academy Museum and School in New York, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Honolulu Museum of Art, and the Buffalo Bill Historical Center in Wyoming. She was elected as president of the National Academy of Design in 2005. She has taught at Hunter College, SUNY Purchase, Brooklyn College, University of Pennsylvania, the Art Student's League of New York and the National Academy of Design.
