Roz Chast

Roz Chast is an American cartoonist who creates humorous observations about everyday life and childhood. Chast’s cartoons are based on her own experiences and feature a recurring cast of characters, a sharp wit, and an acute attention to detail. In an emblematic cartoon that was published in the New Yorker in 1993, Chast drew two teenagers sitting on a sidewalk with a caption that reads “I’m going to run away and join the circus. Not one of those, big tacky ones- something more European and intimate.” She is best known for her work as a staff cartoonist at the New Yorker and for her graphic memoir, Can't We Talk About Something More Pleasant? 

Chast’s work has been exhibited in group and solo shows at the Museum of the City of New York, The New York Academy of Sciences, the Metropolitan Opera House, and the Norman Rockwell Museum. She has received numerous awards, including the National Book Critics’ Circle award for Autobiography, and New York City Literary Award for Humor. She has been awarded honorary doctorates from Dartmouth College, Lesley University, and Pratt Institute.
