Matthew Langley
Matthew's technique in creating the artwork comes from building and extending as well as reducing and minimizing the painted surface. He believes that this is not counter-productive, and that often the way forward is to build, rebuild and start again. Often this will employ semi-transparent layers of paint combining the undersurface of the artwork to achieve the artist's intent. Langley's artistic background relates to a wide variety of interests. He is well versed in Color Field painting - in particular, work by Morris Louis, Sam Gilliam, and Gene Davis, as well as the abstraction from Mark Rothko, Richard Diebenkorn, and Callum Innes among others. The artist also has a great interest in the physical paint-handling of artists like Anselm Kiefer and Gerhard Richter.
The NYC-based artist has widely exhibited in solo and group exhibitions in the United States, mainly on the East Coast. His recent one-man shows include The New Paintings at Blank Space, New York, NY in 2015, and Looking In: New Painting at Axom, Rochester, NY in 2014. His upcoming solo exhibition will be on view at Susan Calloway Fine Arts from September 16 until October 22, 2016. Langley's work has been covered in publications such as Art in …
