Mark Wallinger

Whether questioning the paradoxes of religion in video installations through his alter ego, Blind Faith, or erecting a life-size Christ figure, Ecce Homo, in Trafalgar Square, the first work to occupy the empty fourth plinth, Mark Wallinger directly provokes religious and social commentary in his work. Painter, sculptor, and video artist, Wallinger plays with perception and perspective work while simultaneously layering it with cultural, historical, and mystical references to uncover.  

He has impressively produced work in solo exhibitions yearly since 1990. In 2007 Wallinger was awarded the Tuner Prize for one of his most well known works, State Britain, a recreation of peace campaigner, Brian Haw’s one-man political protest against war and foreign policy in Parliament Square.  The site-specific commission ran along the full length of the Duveen Galleries at the Tate Modern. In 2011 his design of a giant white racehorse was additionally awarded the winning proposal for the Ebbsfleet Landmark Project.
