Malcolm Morley

Often drawing inspiration from technological and martial images, Malcolm Morley creates paintings that demonstrate deft technique, careful color choices, and gestural brushstrokes. Perhaps best known for his photorealism (although he prefers the term "super realism"), the artist captures and recreates tiny details from newspapers and personal photographs alike, even as he constructs more complex compositions. For example, in Morley's work Rat Tat Tat (2001), model airplanes and the accompanying directions are faithfully replicated, evoking a sense of nostalgia, heightened by playful colors and spatial relationships. He has received numerous awards, including the inaugural Turner Prize, and has seen his works exhibited at numerous public and private institutions, including the Guggenheim Museum, the Whitney Museum, and the Museum of Modern Art.
