Karla Black

Scottish artist Karla Black creates large-scale, site specific works, employing both traditional artistic media and everyday materials, including chalk, dust, and dirt. Working alone in galleries and museums, Black creates works that are designed to respond to the light and layout of a particular place. Interested in the architecture of forms, Black designs sculptures that often appear to be caught in a state of near collapse. She is particular interested in process and the evolution of a work, and though her hand is not typically evident in the final work, her works celebrate the spontaneous decisions and movements of the artist as she navigates the environment 

Black’s work has been the subject of numerous exhibitions, including solo shows at the Gemeentemuseum in the Hague, the Gallery of Modern Art in Glasgow, the Kunsthalle Nürnberg, the Migros Museum in Zurich, and Modern Art Oxford. In 2011, she represented Scotland at the 54^th Venice Biennale, and was nominated for a Turner Prize that same year.
