John A Sargent III

The work of John A. Sargent III begins from observations of nature. The artist says of his work, “there is a distillation to a response or thought which is often merely a feeling but singular. There are plenty of false starts and fizzles. As the work evolves physically, emotionally, and intellectually, layers of paint are added in a dance between mastery and letting go. It must personally satisfy a technical level of clarity but it must also express a depth of mystery that is somehow a surprise and a mystery, a muchness, an other.”

Sargent’s work has been included in a number of exhibitions including Cleveland Center for Contemporary Art, Cleveland, Ohio, Serendipity Gallery, Boca Grande, Florida, William Bennett Gallery, New York, and The Butler Institute of American Art, Youngstown, Ohio, among others. In 2015 Sargent was awarded an award for individual excellence by the Ohio Arts Council. That same year he was a curated participant in the Elmurst Art Museum’s exhibit “New American Painting.” In 2014 his work was acquired by the Benetton Corporation and presented in their Imago Mundi at the Venice Biennale.
