Jackie Mock
With a humorous combination of alchemy, archaeology, and art, Jackie Mock captures elements of mundane experience to transform them to precious objects that reference everything from finely crafted reliquaries, to archaic mosaics, and elaborate specimen displays. Her practice stems from the obsessive need to collect, catalogue and archive the unexpected. Through diverse means of acquisition (from craigslist want-ads to discarded objects), she turns everyday ephemera into sculptural work by integrating archiving practices and display methodologies typically applied to historic specimens. Her embrace of the physicality of each material is a playful comment on their fragmented and trivial nature. Yet, it is her focus on a high level of craftsmanship and a reverence for the materials that her work becomes as much about the history of the artifacts as it is about her own personal history.
