Ignacio Iturria

Uruguayan artist Ignacio Iturria creates expressive images seeped in cryptic allegory, much of it depicting disproportionately large domestic spaces and fixtures (sinks the size of pools, swollen tables, rooms built within picture frames). Mythic and poetic, Iturria's work explores the way people’s inner lives can expand and fill the world around them. Paintings such as his 1997 painting Héroe volador (“flying hero”), for instance, imagine a tableaux in each drawer of a wooden chest, representing past memories and events. 

Iturria’s work can be found in several major collections, including the Museum of Fine Arts in Caracas, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Montevideo, and the Museo Rufino Tamayo in Mexico City. He was the 2001 winner of the Figari Award and was winner of the Casa di Risparmio Award at the 1995 Venice Biennale.
