Hamish Fulton

British conceptual artist Hamish Fulton is one of the pioneering practitioners of site-specific performance art, often staged outside of urban areas. Much of his work has been the documentation of walks taken by the artist through specific terrains, captured in poetry, on film, or as sculptural objects. Those journeys can take anywhere from a few hours to several weeks and are sometimes planned to coincide with natural events, like full moons or solstices. His walks often result in wall texts of concrete poetry, using design and textual elements to convey the course and duration of a walk. Works such as A Walk From Vent In Austria to the Castle of Juval in Italy Travelling by the Way of Tisenjoch Starting on the Afternoon of 10 July Sleeping at the Similaunhütte Ending on the Afternoon of 11 July 2002 are barely depicted except by text and some spare documentation. As Fulton has said, “An object cannot compete with an experience.”

Hamish’s work has been shown at, among other institutions, the Tate, the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, the Stedlijk Museum, and the Centre Georges Pompidou. His work can be found in the collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Los Angeles County Museum of Contemporary Art, Kunstmuseum Basel, the Museum of Modern Art, and many others.
