Gert & Uwe Tobias

Romanian twin brothers Gert and Uwe Tobias are known for their collaborative practice that encompasses woodcuts, sculptures, collages and drawings. Large scale woodcuts and mural-like paintings combine modernist abstraction with surreal folk art and decorative motifs. Often reminiscent of stage sets, the brothers’ work is at once fantastical and formalist, evoking the visual legacies of Eastern European folklore and German post-war style.

Gert and Uwe Tobias have shown their collaborative works in a number of solo exhibitions including Kunsteverein Hamburg, Germany, Contemporary Fine Arts, Berlin, FRAC Auvergne, Clermont Ferrant, France, Kupferstich-Kabinett, Dresden, Gemeentemuseum, The Hague, Netherlands, Kunstsaele Berlin, Berlin, Germany, Maureen Paley, London, Nottingham Contemporary, Nottingham, UK, Museum of Modern Art, New York, and Hammer Museum of Art, Los Angeles, among others.
