Freya Hansell

Freya Hansell was a force of nature. Born in Detroit in 1940, she was an established part of the eighties Lower East Side art scene. Her seductive Neo-Expressionist paintings convey power, energy, cataclysmic romance, and mystery. “In my painting, I seek an immediate entry, an impact to draw the viewer further into the painting through the center. I want my paintings to be very aggressive, to recreate place and to
construct action…” (Bomb Magazine, Three Painters: April Gornik, Freya Hansell, and Susan Rothenberg, April 1, 1988)

Her prints are in numerous corporate and private collections. Her name and visuals can often be found in the New York Times and art magazines of the period.
