Farhan Siki
Grounded by his roots as a street artist Farhan Siki employs stencils to create work that is critical of contemporary society and consumer culture. With a background in advertising, Siki is drawn to using logos, brands, and symbols in his work. He finds this popular imagery to have strength as a contemporary icon within today’s materialist society. In exploring notions of iconography he embeds renowned creations from Western art history within a sea of logos and brands. While the traditional works referenced seem to sit at opposition with today’s contemporary visual culture fueled by consumerism, upon further investigation Siki suggests that these western icons are not in fact so different. As he engages with everyday symbols he is aware that viewers will have their own personal history with the work that he presents. This relationship allows for a rich and varying interpretation that he both accepts and encourages.
Siki actively exhibits his work throughout prominent Indonesian galleries. Additionally his work has been shown in the Primo Marella Gallery in Milan, Prima Noctis Galleria in Switzerland, Wendt Gallery in New York, Saatchi Gallery in London, Pin Gallery in Beijing.
